Trust, renewal, and a sense of place
Client: Eagar’s Funeral Services extension garden, New Plymouth
Year: 2025
Set at the gateway to New Plymouth’s historic Te Henui Cemetery, this new garden forms part of a $2.5 million redevelopment for Eagar’s Funeral Services, one of Taranaki’s most respected family-run businesses.
Having worked with the Eagars for many years, Michael was again trusted to bring the landscape to life. “Mike, we’ve known you for years, so we said ‘do your thing!’,” said owner Richard Martin. That trust allowed a thoughtful and quietly confident garden to emerge — one that complements the new building’s Japanese-inspired lines with sculptural bonsai, tranquil ponds, and resilient New Zealand natives.
The design softens the architecture, connects seamlessly to the neighbouring volunteer-tended cemetery gardens, and creates a gentle walk of trees and textures that invite reflection, peace, and a quiet sense of hope.
“Mike, we’ve known you for years, so we said do your thing.” — Richard Martin, Eagar’s Funeral Services
